Plus he’s Asian! Do you know how rare it is for Asian men to be depicted like this? Bloody fuckin' rare. He’s the character that you’d usually be playing as, but instead, he’s the players best friend & right hand man. Johnny is the masculine, tough as nails, gets-shit-done badass that is normally what the generic male protagonist is. Which is what led to SR4 and them just cranking up the Gat worship to maximum and running with it.Īll of this, but I also love Johnny Gat’s character on its own. Literally every other idea they had for Gat was infinitely better than the one they ended up going with. When I found out not long after the game's release that they literally killed off Gat only because they knew it would be shocking to people and that they scrapped a bunch of references and plot threads/elements from SR1 & 2 just to not alienate new players, it kinda exposed the new lead writer or whoever it was as incompetent. She constantly had a stick up her ass and it made her completely unlikable to me, and her constantly bitching about Gat seemed like a desperate attempt by the writers to get people to put up with her (because Gat is awesome or whatever) but in the end it's just like nope lol. I understand them wanting to flesh her out and make her no longer be 'useless', but they went too far. Shaundi's sudden moodswing and total demeanor change in SR3 was super-jarring to me.
